Community solar lets you save on electricity without installing panels on your home or business. By subscribing to a local Maine solar farm (virtual connection), you receive credits on your CMP electric bill for your share of the energy produced—lowering your monthly costs with no upfront investment.
How it Works
Community solar makes clean energy accessible to everyone—no rooftop panels required. Instead of installing your own system, you subscribe to a share of a local solar farm like Dixfield Solar, and receive credits on your electric bill for the power your share produces.
1. A Local Solar Farm Generates Clean Energy
Dixfield Solar is a 1.4‑megawatt community solar project built on 10 acres along Route 2 in Dixfield, ME. Approximately 2,600 solar modules feed clean electricity directly into the Central Maine Power (CMP) grid.
2. You Subscribe to a Share
Residents and businesses anywhere within CMP service territory subscribe to a portion of the energy produced by Dixfield Solar. There’s no equipment, installation, or upfront cost—just a simple subscription. Connect Here!
3. You Receive Credits on Your Electric Bill
Each month, your share of the solar farm’s production is converted into credits on your CMP bill through a process called virtual net metering. These credits reduce what you owe to the utility.
4. You Save Money Automatically
Because community solar subscriptions are priced below the value of the bill credits, you save 20% every month for up to 20 years.
5. You Support Local Clean Energy
By subscribing to Dixfield Solar, you help bring more local energy to Maine. The project produces an estimated 1.9 million kWh per year and reduces carbon emissions by more than 740 tons annually (or 1.5 million pounds).
Community solar boosts local resilience, creates jobs, and keeps more energy dollars circulating within the community. It also helps utilities meet renewable‑energy goals while giving customers more control over their energy choices.
